McKinsey tracked 3,770 leading firms across 69 industries and locked onto 18 "future arenas" — high-growth, high-iteration sectors that now drive nearly half of global market-cap and revenue growth. Total: $33T market cap, $5T+ revenue, 29% market-cap CAGR vs. 8% for non-arena sectors. AI is the substrate, US and China are the two poles, and a small set of "omniscalers" cross multiple arenas at once.
AI delivered most of the market-cap growth (+$11T). Digital led on revenue. Electrification is the theme China dominates.
Based on 2022–2025 market-cap and revenue growth across the 18 arenas.
U.S. captures 75% of market-cap; China captures 30% of revenue. Different industries, different game.
AI captured 60% of total arena market-cap growth 2022–2025. Semis, cloud and AI software are the connected layer underneath every other arena — from autonomy to drug discovery to industrial robotics.
Nine firms cross multiple arenas, combine for $2.7T revenue (Italy's GDP) and $800B annual R&D + capex. Their advantage is reuse of compute, data and customer base across arenas.
U.S. leads on market-cap and AI ecosystem; China leads on revenue in electrification (EV, battery, fission) and remains the manufacturing scale story. Europe is strong in semi-equipment (ASML); Japan / Korea on memory + robotics.
NVIDIA in semis, ASML in litho — focused specialists outpace broad expansion when the moat is deep. McKinsey's advice: pick your arena, reuse capability, take a long view.
For wholesale and import operators, the arena framework points at where end-customer spending will concentrate over the next decade. Electronics / battery / AI-adjacent SKUs ride the AI substrate; EV-related accessories ride China's electrification scale; biotech and obesity-drug supply chains are emerging arenas. Pair with Hamilton Index 2026 (atlas-c61) for the industrial-strength snapshot and U.S. April retail (atlas-c72) for the consumer side that pulls these arenas through trade.
