China's Seven Geographic Regions · A Sourcing Map for Importers
Chinese suppliers are rarely described by province in a quotation — they are described by region, and this seven-region division is the vocabulary the whole supply chain uses. East China (Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong) is the wealthiest and densest manufacturing belt, anchored on the Yangtze Delta and the ports of Shanghai and Ningbo. South China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, plus Hong Kong and Macau) is the country's open door, built around the Pearl River Delta and the ports of Shenzhen and Guangzhou. North China (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia) is the political core and the heavy-materials base; Northeast China (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning) is the black-soil grain belt and the firstborn of Chinese heavy industry. Central China (Henan, Hubei, Hunan) is the inland crossroads where the Yellow and Yangtze corridors meet; Southwest China (Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet) has the most complex terrain and a fast-growing inland electronics and appliance base; and Northwest China (Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xinjiang) is the Silk Road interior — desert, grassland and plateau, energy and cotton.
Why this matters for B2B
For a Houston importer, the region usually tells you the product category, the lead time and the freight cost before you ever see a factory address. South China (Pearl River Delta) is where most electronics, small appliances, lighting and furniture hardware originate, moving out through Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. East China (Yangtze Delta) covers textiles, home goods, hardware, tools and building materials through Shanghai and Ningbo. North and Northeast China lean heavy — steel, machinery and building materials, with Tianjin and Dalian as the outlets. Central and Southwest China increasingly host the factories that moved inland for cost, which means a lower unit price but an extra long domestic haul to a coastal port: a trade-off worth pricing explicitly rather than discovering at booking.
